UNC, Syracuse meet Sunday for ACC women’s lacrosse championship – Richmond.com

UNC, Syracuse renew acquaintances

Familiar foes will collide in Sunday’s 1 p.m. Atlantic Coast Conference women’s lacrosse championship match at Sports Backers Stadium.

Top-seeded North Carolina (15-2) and second-seeded Syracuse (15-5) will meet for the third consecutive year in the final match of the ACC season. Expect drama. North Carolina won last year in overtime. Syracuse won in overtime in 2015. Sunday’s winner will receive the ACC’s automatic invitation to the NCAA Division I playoffs.

The Orange visited North Carolina two weeks ago and returned with a 13-11 victory – UNC’s only loss in its past 22 ACC contests.

Syracuse earned its berth in the title game with Friday’s late-night 15-12 semifinal victory over Virginia.

“We can play better,” said Orange coach Gary Gait. “We’ll have to play better” against the Tar Heels.
